How often should a water tank be cleaned?
Most rainwater tanks need a clean every two to three years. Clean it sooner if the water smells, tastes bad or changes colour, or if the sludge on the floor is more than a few centimetres deep. A tank that supplies drinking water must be kept clean, because the sludge on the floor is where bacteria grow.

Why a tank needs cleaning
Everything that washes off the roof ends up in the tank. Dust, leaves, bird droppings and pollen sink to the floor and make a layer of sludge.
The usual signs: - The water smells or tastes bad - The water is cloudy or brown after rain - Pumps and filters block more often than they did - Leaves, dead animals or insects are in the tank - The tank has not been opened in years
How the job is done
We check the tank first. We look at the roof, the hatch, the inlet and the overflow, and we measure how deep the sludge is.
The sludge is removed from the floor. The walls and floor are cleaned with care, so the liner is not damaged. Debris is taken away and not left on your site.
While the tank is open, we check the liner, the roof and the hatch. If we find a leak, a torn liner or a rusty roof, we tell you and give you a separate quote. You decide what to do.
Keeping the tank clean for longer
A clean tank stays clean for longer when the water going in is clean.
What helps: - Keep the gutters clear of leaves - Fit a first flush diverter to the downpipe - Fit leaf baskets to the inlets - Keep the hatch closed and sealed - Cut back branches that hang over the roof and the tank

Cost is driven by the size of the tank, how deep the sludge is, how much water is in the tank and how easy the site is to get to.

How long it takes
Most household and farm tanks are cleaned in a day or less. Large tanks with deep sludge can take longer.

A clean tank is a big step to safe water, but it is not the only step. Keep the gutters, the inlets and the hatch in good condition. If you drink the tank water, have it tested.
